WARNING: Reports of theft of laptops from offices on the Pietermaritzburg campus seems to be happening more frequently since the beginning of the year, in most, if not all of these incidents, it was found that the office was left open/unattended. Below please find simple but effective tips on preventing these incidents from happening.
When a crime is committed, the offender must have the desire, ability, and opportunity to commit the crime.
Risk Management Services (RMS) can do little to remove the offender’s desire and ability to commit crimes, but together WE can remove the element of opportunity.
THIS IS CRIME PREVENTION. Together we can remove the temptation of opportunity by taking a few simple precautions.
Protect Your Property:
- Lock your office/residence every time you leave, even for a short time. This includes your motor vehicle.
- Do not leave valuables lying out in the open or in unlocked vehicles.
- Engrave all your valuable property.
- Record the serial numbers and brand names of all property of value.
Protect Yourself:
- Lock your doors when you take a nap or go to sleep for the evening.
- Require identification before admitting someone unfamiliar into your office/residence or your vehicle.
- Avoid walking alone at night, if possible, and stay on lighted routes.
- Inform RMS of suspicious persons. This could stop a crime before it happens.
- You may offer confidential assistance and information to RMS. Crime prevention is important to the campus community and you can help by reporting any crime or suspected crime to RMS immediately. By doing so, you may be preventing someone from becoming a victim of a crime.
Issued in the interests of Public Safety by Risk Management Services, Pietermaritzburg Campus, 24 hour emergency number 260-5211
The Campus Safety, Health and Environment Office is located in House no. 5, Milner Road.
The SHE Office is currently setting up Health and Safety Committees to cover all nine zones on the campus (including Ukulinga Research Farm). These Committees will comprise the officially-appointed safety representatives for all buildings/areas within each zone.
Emergency App
We would like all staff and students to know that RMS has an emergency alert button on the MYUKZN app, that they can use to get help in emergency situations.
To access this emergency feature, all you need to do is download the app and register as a user.
When the panic button is pressed it will alert the RMS control room who will attend to the emergency.
